SOME USEFUL HINTS WHILE IN MAZATLAN
  • AT SUPERMARKETS - THE KIDS OR SENIOR CITIZENS THAT PUT YOUR THINGS IN THE BAGS, ARE NOT PAYED BY ANYONE. THEY RECEIVE
TIPS FROM YOU. THAT IS THEIR ONLY INCOME. KIDS ARE ALLOWED TO WORK THERE ONLY IF THEY HAVE GOOD GRADES AT SCHOOL.
THIS WAY THEY CAN HELP THEIR FAMILIES.
  • AT RESTAURANTS -  IT IS CUSTOMARY TO ASK FOR THE BILL WHEN YOU ARE DONE. THEY DO NOT RUSH YOU TO LEAVE, SO AT MOST
RESTAURANTS YOU HAVE TO ASK. AS IN THE US AND CANADA, TIPS ARE BETWEEN 10 AND 15% OF THE BILL, DEPENDING ON THE
    SERVICE.
  • TAXIS - YOU MUST ESTABLISH AN AGREEMENT BEFORE YOU BOARD THE TAXI. THEY DO NOT HAVE A METER. AS YOU DO NOT LIVE HERE,
ASK SOMEONE FIRST (BELLBOY, FRONT DESK) SO YOU HAVE AN IDEA, THEN YOU GO FROM THERE.  THERE ARE TWO KINDS,  GREEN AND
WHITE AND RED AND WHITE. YOU CAN ALSO CALL THEM BY PHONE (GREEN 986-1111) (RED 985-2828)
TAXIS ARE DIVIDED BETWEEN ECO-TAXIS (REGULAR CLOSED CARS) & SAFARIS (CALLED "THE THING
IN THE USA.
  • BUSES -THE BUSES ARE OWNED INDEPENDENTLY, NOT FROM THE GOVERMENT. ALTHOUGH THEY REGULATE THE PRICE. YOU DO NOT
HAVE TO HAVE THE EXACT AMOUNT WHEN YOU PAY TO GET ON. THEY WILL GIVE YOU CHANGE. THAT IS WHY THEY GIVE YOU A TICKET.
WHICH  IS NOT A TRANSFER TICKET, IT IS PROOF THAT YOU PAID. THERE IS AN INSPECTOR, THAT GETS ON CERTAIN BUSES TO CHECK
THAT EVERYONE HAS PAID. THE COST IS 4 PESOS OR 5 PESOS (PAST THE MARINA) IN THE REGULAR BUSES. 8 AND 10 PESOS FOR THE
    AIR CONDITIONED BUSES.

MAZATLAN, SINALOA, MEXICO INFORMATION
Mazatlan is a city rich in culture and history. The main activities are tourism and fishing. The around 675 shrimp boats go out
between September and March and haul in over 40,000 tons per year. Mazatlan is called the shrimp capital of Mexico, some
calling it the shrimp capital of the world.
Mazatlan is becoming one of the favorite cities of Americans and Canadians to retire. Many things help Mazatlan, such as,
beautiful beaches, friendly people, nice weather, mountains close by. As for shopping we have chain supermarkets such as
Walmart, Soriana, Mega, Ley, Aurrera, Sams Club, Office Depot, Office Max, Home Depot and rumors are about Costco and other
Mexican chain supermarkets.
As for franchises, we also have MacDonalds, Burguer King, Dairy Queen, Subway, Baskin Robbins, Applebees, KFC, Dominos and
Starbucks.
There is so much construction going on at this moment (June 2010). Towers of full time condominiums, like: Hydra, Penninsula,
Costa Bonita, Solaria, Mangle, Torrenza, Escondido towers, Las Gavias Grand and many more, plus Crown Plaza and Riu (spanish)
Hotels, opened around a year ago. Another big project that opened a few months ago is the Mazatlan Convention center (Mazatlan
International Center), with a capacity of 4500 people.
So Mazatlan is not just a little fishing village like many people think, it is a big city that is growing everyday more and
more. The best part is that the old section will remain that way, while the new part will grow and be as modern as they want.
